About me
My name is Brian White-Starrs. I'm from Waterford, Ireland. I live just outside Belfast with my husband and our two cats.
In 1996, I lived in social housing and my dad had a small (and ultimately unprofitable) business. He bought a second-hand 386SX to "manage his accounts."
Even for the time, the half-width SX bus, 4MB of RAM and 40MB hard disk made it a pretty underpowered machine.
If I was going to play games, I'd have to write them myself.
I swapped my pocket money for a terrible QBasic book. That decision accidentally shaped more of my life than I ever expected.
I've been a software engineer, tech support agent, software engineer, van driver, software engineer again, people manager, technically paid comedy writer, software engineer, people manager and software engineer.
It's taken a while but I think I've spotted the pattern.
I would be genuinely delighted to help if you're trying to get started in the industry, have questions about your career or just want to know how to politely ask your boss for more money.
